Back on the skinny wheels....

Well its back to base training time again so its long easy riding on the road. Its great to spend so much time on the bike especially now that the sun is up and it isn't cold anymore (rain kinda sucks though!).

Its also Amashova time again and i'm racing it this year after a break from road racing of 7 years (makes me sound old.) Looking forward to it though, just got to breathe out of every orifice to keep up with the bunch to the Fox Hill then i'll be fine!

The shop has been super busy lately! We've had a great run on Merida dualies (the 96 range) and the 29er bikes are starting to move nicely! Christmas is not too far around the corner - we've got everything you need so don't wait until the last minute!

Johann and his brother Malan are off to Swaziland to do the Swazi Frontier 3-day stage race. Johann has a 2 week old broken collarbone so good luck to them through the gruelling stages!

If you're racing Amashova we'll see you out on the road - ride safe!

Cheers

Its Spring....

Crumbs its September already! Its definitely warmer and its lighter earlier in the morning which makes riding way more pleasant!

There's been a few races on lately. Cowan House was 2-and-a-bit weeks ago and there was a huge turnout! It was quite nice how the organizers had changed the route around from previous years and kept the 40km and 20km races seperate. The batch starts really helped with congestion in the single track so all in all it was a great race - Well done to Andy Wood and Cowan House School!

This Sunday just past was the Howick Highlander. Now Howick is known for its brilliant single track so we always look forward to races out yhere! Another massive turnout with over 1000 pre-entries and batch starts are definitely the way to go! First half of the race was pretty boring as it was mostly dirt road but eventually we got lots of singletrack. There was a huge cock-up on the course as the route marking wasn't good enough and there weren't enough marshals so many people took wrong routes and ended up missing out a good few kms of the race! It must have been a nightmare for the organizers to sort out the results and overall prize winners but its good they need to learn and will hopefully improve next year!

The shop is coming along nicely! We've been open for 4 months now and it just keeps getting better and better! We've sold our first Pivot! Bruce Mackenzie is going to be the proud new owner of a Pivot Mach 429 - a 4" travel 29" dualie - The frame is on its way from the states and i'll post pictures of it when it arrives and as we build it up!

Another interesting bike we've just sold is the Niner MCR - MCR stands for Magic Carpet Ride... Its a 29" geared hardtail frame made from Reynolds 853 Steel tubing. Will post pictures tomorrow as we finish building it up. The parts kit for the Silver-Spaceman Ibis Mojo finally arrived so the bike is built up! It looks awesome (haven't had a chance to test ride it yet but it feels awesome just riding it in the parking lot.)

Heard today that Candy Neethling got Bronze at Worlds - flipping brilliant! Well done Candy! Good luck to James Reid who is also racing Junior Worlds - he is in a tough age category but James is super strong so we're looking forward to seeing his results! And hopefully Burry and Greg will bring back gold when they race this weekend!

That's it for now....we've got a Saeco coffee machine in the shop now so stop in for a cup and a chat and good luck with the Hill 2 Hill training - its just around the corner....

Cheers

Busy times...

I've been a bit quiet on the electronic update side recently! Been a rather busy and tiring 3 weeks after the birth of Olivia but it kind of feels like we're starting to get into a routine.  I've ridden once in the last 3 weeks and i'm really missing it! I plan to do 3.5 hours on the road tomorrow morning and will set my alarm for 04:00 but we'll see how much sleep I get tonight! I'm getting a new road bike, a Merida 905 - nice little bike with Ultegra 10spd. Should definitley help me get up to ride (even if i'm only running on 3-4 hours of sleep!)

The shop has been awesomely busy and we are getting busier and busier as the months roll on! It's been 3 full months now and things are going very well! This is a fantastic time of the year as we get to drool over all the new 2010 bike stuff that is being released! The 2010 Merida's have started arriving already and the Cannondales are due sometime in October!

Got some nice races coming up (so i really need to cram some training in) like the Cowan House Classic in 2 weeks time, Howick Highlander at the end of the month, Hill2Hill next month (i'm not helping out this year so i can ride it for the 1st time - selfish I know but I really want to ride it!), and 2 road events next month; the Midmar Notts and the Amashova. I haven't raced road for years and miss it a bit so will try give the roadies a run for their money here and there.

Our website is up and running! Check out www.w2cycling.co.za and I am endevouring to update it regularly!

Looks like Olivia's drifting off to sleep so I better take whatever sleep I can get and hopefully be able to drag myslef out of bed tomorrow morning to ride!

Goodnight....

New Ibis Mojo HD

Big Ibis News

Mojo HD Hits the Slopes

It's time to let the "HD" out of the bag.

Over the last couple years, we've been working on a new 160mm travel big brother to the Mojo Carbon and Mojo SL (each with 140mm travel), we're temporarily calling it the "Mojo HD". And now we think it's about time to tell you about it.

Introducing the Ibis Mojo HD

Before we tell you about what nitty gritty details we're willing to divulge, we want to let you know that we've already been putting this bike through the paces, some of them rigorous.

Already a Race Winner

Brian Lopes spent the last week in Vars France, getting ready for and then competing in the Enduro Trophy des Nations. This is an enduro style race, becoming quite popular in Europe these days, where riders compete in a number of stages over a two day period with "beaucoup" downhill. This particular event had 10 stages over two days and featured over 10,000 M of descending. If you're bad at math (or don't like the metric system) that's 32,808.4 feet of descent. Or 6.21 MILES straight down, measured vertically! This race also had a bonus stage at 10PM on saturday night that didn't count for the overall time, but the winner got an extra 500 Euros of party money.
Brian teamed up with WTB's Mark Weir and Jason Moescheler to form Team USA 1. Brian notched the first win for his prototype Mojo HD on its first day of racing by winning one of the stages on Saturday, propelling the team to second overall on Saturday night.

Brian is very happy with the bike, and told us a couple things in text messages received over the weekend.

"bike is awesome"
OK, we understand typing is not that easy on a Blackberry.

Brian's Sunday Night Report
Seriously though, here we we have an extra long Blackberry missive from Monsieur Lopes:

"The Enduro race was a lot harder than I expected. The toll it took on everything: wheels, tires, brakes, suspension, the body, and of course the frame were beyond what I imagined. The new "HD" Ibis never missed a beat. For only getting the frame one week ago & with only one ride on it before packing it up for this race, it couldn't have gone through any more of a test than the abusive one I gave it here in France. With 10 demanding races, 3 of which ended with flat tires, the French won all but one race (which I won!). It was hard to beat them on course they knew better than all the rest, basically they were on their home track at times, where knowing the course saved them time.
It's hard to believe that this bike isn't much heavier than the standard mojo, as it was eating up courses that were worthy of full-on DH rigs. The added travel, stiffness, clearance for larger tires and a 8" rotor allow you to take on the toughest terrain you can throw at it, but it's still efficient and light enough to pedal up any hill. Another weapon is added to the ibis line up...

Wow, so there you go. The only non-French winner of any stage was Brian, and they ended second overall. We think that's pretty impressive. Without further fluff, here's a bit more about the bike.

Mojo "HD" Prototype Specifications

  • Price and delivery date are both to be decided.
  • 160mm of rear wheel travel.
  • DW Link Suspension.
  • 26" Wheels.
  • Target weight for the frame and shock: 6.2-6.5 lbs. (we're not there yet but are fine-tuning the layup).
  • 67 degree head angle with a 160mm fork (Brian was running a 170mm fork this weekend, you can also run a 180mm).
  • Chain stay length: 17.125".
  • 12 x 135mm Maxle rear axle.
  • Post mount magnesium left dropout, carbon right dropout.
  • Compatible with the new tapered steerer standard: 1 1/8th hidden upper, 1.5 traditional lower.
  • Compatible with both Chris King InSet and Cane Creek Frustum headsets.
  • If you want to run your current straight 1 1/8" fork, we've got you covered too. We will have an adapter available, and you will be able to use a King headset top and bottom.
  • 2.35"-2.5" rear tire depending on brand and height of cornering knobs.
  • Dual row angular contact bearings in the front of the lower link that have less play than standard sealed bearings. Preload adjustment is not necessary. Large 28mm x 15mm x 7mm radial bearings in the rear for stiffness and long wear.
  • The leverage ratio, like the Mojo and Mojo SL is designed for air shocks. The Mojo HD comes with a 8.5" x 2.5" Fox RP23. A DHX air will work on all but the small size. A coil shock is not offered because the linkage rates weren't designed for it. We lowered the top tube to get slightly better standover than the regular mojo while having a higher BB because of the longer travel (we managed to retain the DHX air compatibility in 3 of the 4 sizes).
  • The Bottom Bracket height is 13.8"-14" depending on tires.
  • Chain guide development is well on its way, we'll announce compatible brands soon. The frame will not have ISCG mounts so it will not be Hammerschmidt compatible.
  • The HD runs full cable housing. Rear brake and rear deraileur run on the down tube, with hidden swingarm housing for the rear derailleur.
  • Front derailleur (if you use one) and adjustible seatpost housing (if you use one) run along the top tube.
  • And once again, just to make sure you got it, price and delivery date are both yet to be decided.

Stay tuned for more.

Wsquared Weekend away - Clearwater Trails

On Sunday 14th June we trekked down to Port Edward to do the Sardine Classic. The race was very cool although I would never have expected so much climbing for a coastal race. We stayed over at Clearwater Trails that night and went for an epic ride in the Transkei on Monday morning lead by Jan Abbot.

It was fantastic but the pictures speak for themselves... (thanks Shale for the photo's:-)

MTB Fun and Demo Day - Bushview MTB Park

We are hosting an MTB fun day and demo bike day at the Bushview MTB Park, Lynfield Park (PMB) this Saturday 20 June starting at 14:00. The plan is to have a fun afternoon of riding and then a bring and braai in the evening. We are bringing our fleet of demo bikes along for anyone to try out so here is the perfect chance to ride an Ellsworth, Titus, Niner or Cannondale (and trust me, you want to ride these bikes…they are unreal!)

The emphasis of the afternoon is to have fun doing what we all love, riding mountain bikes. There will however be a few spot prizes for those who want to try post the fastest lap of the day around the 7km loop; for whoever does the most continuous laps on the pump track (it’s not as easy as it sounds); best trick on the dirt jumps (and probably a prize for the best crash as well….those are always bound to happen when dirt jumps are involved.)

The MTB Park boasts brilliant facilities including a 7km loop of mostly singletrack, a pump track, dirt jumps, MX and pee-wee track as well as a very nice pub located in an old railway station.

This is a family day so bring the whole family and join us for some good old fashioned MTB fun.

Directions: From PMB/Durban, on the N3 take the Lynnfield Park/Lion Park turnoff. Turn left and follow the road towards Lynnfield Park. Travel over 5 speed bumps then turn left onto the D354 (at the post boxes) and go over the hill onto the dirt road for about 1.5km and Bush View will be on your left.

See you there!

Feeding Your Cycling Addiction #4

It’s only about a week away from the shortest day of the year … and then the days will start to get longer give us more time to do our favourite thing … ride our bikes!

I am writing this at about 6am … just got back from gym where my friend Robert helped me to keep my body ready for when the long riding days come … on my way back from gym my car showed it as 7 degrees. No wonder our night rides are not attracting huge numbers. You must be a true cycling addict to go out at night in temperature below 10.

Our official shop opening has come and gone and the feedback has been wonderful. A big thank you to all of you who made the effort to join us on this important day. Sandra Sailer’s presentation also stimulated much discussion and we will have her around again soon to talk to us more about mental preparedness.

This coming weekend a group of us are going to Port Edward to take part in the Sardine Classic and we are staying at Clearwater Trails for Jan to take us across to Transkei on Monday where he has build an awesome trail of around 35 km. Accommodation at Clearwater for Sunday evening is all taken, but you are welcome to join us Monday morning for our Transkei jaunt. We aim to leave Clearwater at around 8h00 on Monday morning to be back around lunch time …

BIKES

Just too remind you, we stock the following bikes:

·         Merida www.merida-bikes.com

·         Cannondale www.cannondale.com

·         NINER www.ninerbikes.com

·         Ellsworth www.ellsworthbikes.com

·         Titus www.titusti.com

·         Ibis www.ibiscycles.com

This month it is Cannondale’s turn to get the spot light.

This piece below I took straight of their website … please take the time to read this. It is great and one of the main reasons we have chosen to represent this brand. Cannondale is arguably one of the most innovative and sought after bikes in the world!

Our Philosophy.

We fight to be different... not for the sake of being different but for the sake of being the best. For us, like you, it's the secure click of a cleat meeting its pedal.

It's the first pedal stroke with anticipation of a long ride churning within.
Its the first breath inhaled.
It's the precise moment just before reaching the apex of a long climb, and the exhilaration of conquering it.
It's the thrill of going down...fast.
It's finally getting through that technical section and then nailing it every time thereafter.
It's the "endo", the road rash, the challenge, the thrill.
It's staring at convention and then disrupting it all to create that unique, spectacular moment in time called your ride.
It's when you realize that between you and your bike, there is nothing you can not accomplish.

For us at Cannondale, it's building, testing and rebuilding; making it better in the process, never settling for "good enough". It's knowing it, verses guessing it and using the world's greatest athletes to prove it. It's having such high standards and expectations in how we want product to perform that we are relentless in our pursuit.

It's not about superfluous welds or fancy etchings, it's about performance, innovation, superior product. Does it contribute to the ride? Does it do what we want it to do? When we step back and look at our work, the answer is easy... it does, and we feel it everyday, knowing you'll feel it to
o.

Our Mission.

"Our mission is to create innovative, quality products that inspire cyclists around the world." To succeed in our mission:

  • We strive to exceed the expectations of our consumers, retailers and business partners.
  • We believe our people drive our success and act accordingly.
  • We work together as one global team.
  • We act with respect, responsibility and integrity.
  • We produce a stream of innovative, quality products.
  • We devise flexible manufacturing processes that enable us to deliver those innovative, quality products to the market quickly and then back them with excellent customer service.
  • We limit our distribution to the best specialty retailers in the world.
  • We stay lean, remain competitive and entrepreneurial.
  • We promote from within whenever possible.
  • We concentrate on detail, because the last 5% is often the difference between success and failure.
  • We continuously improve everything.
  • We govern our every deed by what is ‘just and right’.

The History.

1971 – Cannondale started in a crowded loft above a pickle factory.

1983 – Launched its 1st touring bike

1984 – 1st Mountain bike with aluminium frames that got the industry to sit up and take notice

2009 Duzi Mfula Race Report - Mel Palframan

Being my first Duzi Mfula I really didn’t know what to expect. Even though the morning was freezing cold at the start the atmosphere was so warm and welcoming. It was clear that everyone was there to go out and have a fun day. The start was delayed by half an hour as according to the race organizers the markers on route were moved by the local inhabitants. This needed to be sorted out before the race could get on its way, as well as the clearing of some taxis on the roads. The ride was sorted into batches to avoid congestion in river crossings and single track. According to other riders this made the ride much more enjoyable and spread out.

My partner, Gregg McDonough (one of the makers of the course) and I started in batch B on day 1 (78kms). The start wasn’t fast like most races which showed that everyone was there to enjoy rather than to race. Starting on a gravel road it was very dusty but soon all the riders spread out so it was less dusty and easier to see. Probably one of my most challenging parts of day one was the grassy section in the beginning. What felt like miles and miles of riding on grass was really tiring. There were some incredible hills (Ngumeni for example) throughout the day there was always an awesome descent to recover on and enjoy.

Through the whole ride the course crossed over the Duzi meaning we would have to get wet. This made it very uncomfortable to ride with wet shoes which made it even colder too! But coming down into the valley closer to Inanda dam were some of the most breath taking views I have ever seen. This made me forget any discomfort of a long challenging ride and being cold! Closer to the finish it was tar road which was probably the fastest part of the course (although it surprised us with some frighteningly steel climbs!) The course took us on and off this road into awesome trails until eventually we could hear the music and loud speaker of the finish. After a hard days ride it was the best sound ever! Everyone was very supportive at the finish and we were welcomed home by Doug Bird and given a food pack and energy drink which was greatly needed! Greg and I completed this day in 5 hours 6 minutes. This is what we were aiming for. The day definitely had the most amazing riding I have ever seen!
There was camping at the finish of day one next to Inanda dam but we decided to stay in Kloof.
Day 2 (40kms) was a much warmer morning although the weather report said rain. Starting in batch B again we got on our way. Day two took us up probably the longest hardest climbs of the Duzi Mfula. It took forever for my legs to warm up as they were so stiff and sore from the previous day! As soon as I thought the course had started to even out it hit us with the dreaded Burma. Famous for the Duzi Canoe Marathon (where the paddlers carry their boats over the mountain as one of the portages) we had to pick up our bikes and hike up the+- 4km steep mountain. At the top we were eventually welcomed by the USN water tables where they had (like day 1) cooked potatoes, muffins and USN energy bars and juice.

After Burma the rest of the course was equally as tough and bumpy making it harder than usual especially with tired legs from the day before! On day 2 we climbed a total of 1225 m compared to 1378m the previous day!!! Riding changed completely along day 2 between the scenic inland areas, the rural settlements and the polluted areas closer to Durban. The coarse ended going through the Durban Motor Cross track and onto a golf course right next to Blue lagoon finish. Gregg and I finished in a time of 2hrs 58. Coming 80th overall.

Roan Exelby and David Leiman took the win in a time of 3hrs19 on day 1 and 1hr 55 on day 2.Carl Calverley and David Lowe came in second with Craig Stone and Nick Floris in third. Shawna Thunder (the first lady) and her partner Mathew Goetsch came in an amazing 7th place over all.

BIKES

Just to remind you, we stock the following bikes:

We are in the process of sorting out all our demo bikes and have the following bikes for you to test ride at this point in time:

·        Cannondale Rize, size medium

·        NINER EMD, size medium … (EMD stands for Eat My Dust!!)

We will offer you demo’s in IBIS, Ellsworth, Titus and more Niner’s soon.

In line with our previous newsletter, herewith then the NINER story.

”The big revolution”… yes, all Niner’s have 29’ wheels …

Niner Bikes was founded by Chris Sugai and Steve Domahidy, two riding buddies who regularly met at their local Wednesday night ride. Niner is the culmination of many conversations over coffee, the handlebars of their bikes and cold beer.

Before we tell you more about the brand and what makes this bike so great, let’s discuss the concept of LARGE WHEELS first. The basic concept is that a larger wheel will remain on top of obstacles rather than riding “in” the terrain. Riding above the terrain gives you more control and stability because you carry your momentum better. Riding rough stuff with smaller wheels often result in a start-stop action. With big wheels you just role through everything. The larger wheel also increases the centrifugal forces which improves stability even further. Then another huge plus is that the larger wheel increases the amount of tire contact to the ground improving traction greatly.

Niner also has a patented suspension design the call Constantly Varying Arc, or CVA™. It’s unique to Niner, designed in house, and works very differently from other full suspension bikes on the market. CVA™ works very differently to isolate pedalling forces and remain fully active under all conditions.

In order to isolate pedaling forces in a broader range of gearing choices the CVA’s™ ‘instant center’ location is in front of the drive train, in a more general location. In other words, when a rider cranks on the pedals, the chain is trying to pull the lower link down and away from the bottom bracket and the upper link in its regular rotational path. Since the rear triangle is one piece, the result of these opposing forces cancels each other out, leaving the only outlet for chain torque being rotation of the rear wheel, where it’s most wanted. In addition, since the wheel path of the CVA™ suspension is at its most rearward position at sag (between 25-30%), the suspension doesn’t have to overcome chain torque in order to be fully active. This dramatically increases small bump compliance even when hammering on the pedals.

We hope this gives you some understanding of CVA™, but the best test is to go out and ride a Niner full suspension bike, and see for yourself. CVA™ might be a marketing acronym, but the suspension design is much more than just marketing hype. Give it a try; see for yourself… we will have a Niner JETT demo for you to try very soon.

Just a reminder … WHEN YOU BUY A NINER FROM US, WE WILL NOT CHARGE YOU FOR LABOUR FOR AS LONG  AS YOU HAVE THE BIKE!

At WSQUARED we are committed to you like you have never been committed to before. If you buy a custom built bike from us, you will never pay labour for any work we do in our workshop on your beauty again … (This offer excludes Merida and Cannondale).

ARE YOU READY!

The planning for the Life in Motion 5 hour MTB Enduro is well on the way. It is happening on Sunday 21 June at Bushview Bike Park close to Lynnfield Park. Racing will start at 8h30 and go through to 13h30. The track is an awesome 7 km loop of mostly sublime single track. You can race as individual, teams of 2 or teams of 3 riders. Teams will take part in a relay manner and the individual/team that has completed the most laps after 5 hours will be deemed the winner. See www.lifeinmotion.co.za for more details and the entry form.
